Learning Disabilities Psychology Essay
Discussion: What are learning disabilities? How are they classified? How can they impact an individual not just in school but throughout life?
What are learning disabilities?
Learning disabilities are neurologically based disorders that interfere with an individual’s ability to effectively process, retain, or communicate information. They are not related to educational opportunity, motivation, or intelligence. Rather, they are linked to the differences in brain functioning that affect learning processes, such as mathematics, listening, reasoning, writing or reading. In healthcare diagnostics, they are categorized as specific learning disorders under neurodevelopmental disorders. Examples include dyscalculia, dysgraphia, and dyslexia (American Psychiatric Association, 2022). Overall, individuals with learning disabilities may experience difficulties in reasoning, speaking, listening, mathematical, writing, or reading skills.
How are they classified?
Learning disabilities are classified based on the area of difficulty affected. Dyscalculia and other mathematical disorders involve difficulties in understanding numbers, calculations, and mathematical reasoning from impaired numerical understanding and problem-solving skills. Dysgraphia and other writing disorders affect spelling, handwriting, and written expression, interfering with spelling, handwriting, and written expression. Dyslexia and other reading disorders affect word recognition and reading comprehension causing impairments in reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension (Chieffo et al., 2023). Some of the disabilities present as non-verbal learning disabilities that affect visual-spatial processing, coordination, and social interpretation. Classifying learning disabilities aids professionals in determining the appropriate interventions and accommodations to support daily functioning and learning (American Psychiatric Association, 2022).
How can they impact an individual not just in school but throughout life?
Learning disabilities impact individuals beyond their school performance. In schools, it has

as individuals struggle to read, comprehend, complete assignments, and complete standardized tests. This can lead to frustration and reduced self-esteem. The repeated academic difficulties have emotional and social impacts as they contribute to low confidence, depression, anxiety, and challenges with peer relationships (Bonuomo et al., 2024). The impacts extend to adulthood as they influence independent living skills, financial stability, workplace performance, and employment opportunities. The difficulties may extend across the lifespan, including difficulties processing information, organization, and communication, affecting social interactions and daily responsibilities. Besides that, persons with learning disabilities may experience broader health and quality of life disparities throughout the life (American Psychiatric Association, 2022).
