Should IQ tests be used on children? State both the advantages and disadvantages of administering IQ tests to children.
Intelligence quotient (IQ) tests are useful tools for evaluating cognitive abilities. However, their use among children is controversial. Supporters of IQ tests use on children argue that it helps in identifying intellectual strengths, giftedness, and learning difficulties. The results allow psychologists and educators to provide appropriate, targeted educational interventions and support services. In addition, the tests help with diagnosing learning and developmental disorders, and guiding individualized education plans for children who need special assistance (Fletcher & Miciak, 2024). Besides that, IQ assessments can reveal patterns of strengths and weaknesses in processing speed, memory, and reasoning that may not be obvious in classroom performance and social environments (Baglieri, 2023).
Despite the mentioned advantages, IQ testing on children has significant disadvantages. IQ tests are standardized tests. The tests cannot fully measure intelligence as it is too complex. The tests can be influenced by testing conditions, motivation, anxiety, socioeconomic background, culture, and language. These influences can potentially lead to inaccurate conclusions about a child’s abilities (Torres van Grinsven, 2022). Besides that, overreliance on IQ tests and scores can result in the child being labelled and stigmatized, even as they face reduced expectations from parents and teachers. Additionally, the test scores may fluctuate over time, especially as the child grows older and has greater exposure to the environment IQ tests on children psychology essay. This results in reduced reliability of the test scores for long-term predictions (Baglieri, 2023).
Would there be any special advantages or disadvantages of using IQ tests on children with disabilities?
For children with disabilities, IQ tests can offer special advantages and disadvantages. An advantage is that the tests can help to identify specific learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, or autism spectrum disorder, thereby guiding specialized interventions and accommodations. This is important for improving access to therapies and
educational
resources tailored to the needs of the child (Babiker et al., 2025). A disadvantage is that the test scores may not be reliable. Motor, behavioral, language, or sensory impairments can interfere with the child’s performance, hindering the tests’ ability to accurately measure the abilities of children with disabilities. Children with learning disabilities or autism may show uneven cognitive profiles, making the test scores misleading (Stephenson et al., 2026). As such, IQ tests should be used on children with disabilities to leverage the advantages, but cautiously interpreted and combined with behavioral, educational, and psychological assessments to minimize the disadvantages.
